Selenium is a trace element and a precursor to the antioxidant, glutathione. It helps to combat free radicals which are responsible for the effects of ageing. Selenium is essential to the production of a variety of enzymes, in particular glutathione-peroxidase. Selenium is known to help protect the cells from oxidative stress, to contribute to normal sperm production and the maintenance of normal hair and nails, and to contribute to normal function of the immune system.
The Recommended Daily Intake for selenium is 55 μg. You are advised not to take several supplements containing selenium simultaneously to avoid exceeding the Recommended Daily Intake.
